What to do at the Barnegat Lighthouse State Park
The Barnegat Lighthouse State Park is located on the northern end of Barnegat Light. There are many activities and attractions available to all those who visit this protected piece of New Jersay land. The state park, which was founded in 1951 has a lighthouse, access to fishing, picnic areas, as well as trails to enjoy birdwatching and sightseeing. The park is open daily from 8am to 10pm.
Barnegat Lighthouse
The Barnegat Lighthouse is a popular tourist site for those visiting not only Barnegat Light, but anywhere along the ocean county shore. The 217 step red and white lighthouse is open from Memorial Day until Labor Day with daily hours of operation of 10:00am to 4:30 pm. Once at the top, you can enjoy panoramic views of Barnegat Light, Island Beach State Park, and Barnegat Bay.
Picnic Areas
There are several locations available to visitors who would like to picnic. There are a number of picnic tables available along the Barnegat Inlet, which offer fantastic views of the water and boats as they pass by. In addition to tables, there are two picnic shelters available. Alcohol, fires, as well as propane stoves are all prohibited. Handicap access is available at these locations.
Trails
The Barnegat Lighthouse Trail is 1.8 mile trail labaled an easy level trail.The start of the trail is called the Maritime Forrest Trail, which is a .2 mile long loop trail through the maritime forrest of Long Beach Island.It is a self guided trail that offeres scenic views as well as the ability to birdwatch. Dogs may use the trail but must remain on a leash at all times. The trail is a great activity for a nice morning walk alone or to take the whole family for a relaxing day outdoors.
